Zahid’s story: Disabled veteran set to be deported despite years of service

Take action: a system that deports a wounded veteran is truly un-American!

On January 12, an immigration judge refused to stay the deportation of U.S. Army veteran Muhammad Zahid Chaudhry.  Zahid has been a legal permanent resident for more than a decade and spent nearly six years in the Army National Guard (permanent residents can serve in the military but doing so does not guarantee they will become citizens).  During this time he sustained injuries to his back that require him to use a wheelchair, and after being honorably discharged from the military Zahid applied for U.S. citizenship.  His failure to previously report misdemeanors committed in Australia in the 1990s on his residency application led to deportation proceedings.  Zahid and his wife Ann continue to fight his deportation to Pakistan.
