Victor and Silvia: Husband struggles after wife’s deporation to El Salvador

My name is Victor Reyes and I am a US Citizen. I am married to Silvia Elizabeth Reyes, who is from a El Salvador. Around January, 2009 an Immigration Officer went to our house and told my wife that she had missed an immigration court date back on 1993 and she had a deportation order.

We consulted with an attorney who advised me to petition legal status for my wife. We were unsuccessful because the government refused to join in our request to re-open my wife’s immigration case so we could pursue a green card for her. Around May, 2010 my wife was ordered to leave the country and leave me, her husband, and our five US citizen children: Eric, 16 years old, , Christian, 12 years old, Emily, 11 years old, Rebecca, 10 years old, and Amber, 8 years old.

It is hard to explain to our children why their mother is not with them, why she has been away for so long, and why I cannot say when she will be coming back. Since she is in El Salvador, she is also suffering being separated from us.  We all cry continuously not knowing when we are going to be together again.  I would like to ask the Congress to fix our broken laws and for the President to stop separating families like mine through deportations.
